Gilels's Beethoven sontatas are matchless for me - a perfect blend of astounding technique, beautifully smooth touch and percussive - explosive when necessary - strength. I have listened to many recordings, live and studio, of most of these sonatas now, and as yet none have been able to tenderly stir and excite me in equal measures the way Gilels does with his renditions.
